Nature's Optimists
It is impossible to feel sad painting sunflowers. Their sunny happy feel-goodness rubs off on
me and gets into my skin with the cadmium yellow. ;0)

The Snake Dance
(acrylic on canvas)
The Venda culture is built on a vibrant mythical belief system, and water is an important theme, believing lakes and rivers to be sacred, and that rains are controlled by the Python God. One of the most sacred sites of the Venda is Lake Fundudzi. Here annually the Domba Python Dance is held, an offering of beer is poured into the lake, and young maidens, as the final stage of their initiation into womanhood, line up in single file and dance in long winding lines, like a snake. The Domba is important to secure good rains for the following season.

A Heart Like Namaqualand
(Acrylic on Canvas)
I saw a Gazania the other day and it reminded me of Namaqualand. Namaqualand is a very arid region of South Africa and Namibia. It is quite popular with both local and international tourists during early springtime, when for a short period this normally arid area becomes covered with a kaleidoscope of colour during the flowering season. This is known throughout South Africa as the Namaqualand daisy season, when orange and white daisies, as well as hundreds of other flowering species, spring up from a previously barren landscape. Aside from a sudden burst of life - Namaqualand is very rich in alluvial diamonds. A part of Little Namaqualand, known as the Richtersveld, is a national park and a World Heritage Site. What this represents for me is regeneration and beauty that blooms in the most desolate wasteland. All it takes is a second glance to recognise real beauty in its latent form. A heart like Namaqualand has many hidden treasures if you bother to look deeper.
